English
Composition CLEP Test
The
English Composition CLEP Test covers the material that is taught
in a freshman class at the 101 college level. This test covers the
skills that you would need to demonstrate for college assignments.
For example you should be able to write well enough to explain,
interpret, analyze and support a point of view. However, this test
does NOT cover some information that would be covered regularly
in the class such as grammatical terms.
There
are two different versions on this test. The main version does not
include an essay. On this version, you will be required to answer
90 questions in 90 minutes. There is no penalty for guessing on
the test and there are some pretest questions included that are
not scored.
If
you take the version of the test that requires an essay, you will
need to answer 50 questions in 45 minutes. You will then be given
45 minutes to complete the written essay.
Some
schools may require you to take an essay with this test so it is
important to check with your academic advisor or counselor before
you begin study or take the test. |
Credits:

Number
of Questions: 90 without essay or 50 with essay

If
you do take the essay, you will write it by hand, via paper and
pencil. It will be graded by two professor s at your college or
university. You will be graded on a 1 to 6 point scale. Each will
give your essay a score and then their scores will be combined.
These scores are then averaged and combined with your multiple choice
score to give you the final score. You will not receive a separate
score for each section, essay or multiple choice.
The
English Composition CLEP Test verifies your writing skills at the
basic sentence level and inside passages as well. You need to be
able to revise a work that will be provided to you. An example is
substituting sentences with a better sentence or word choice. Also,
you could be asked to re-organize sentences in paragraphs. As with
all CLEP tests, the English Composition Test is designed so that
an average student should be able to complete about half of the
questions correctly. This is where the passing score of 50 comes
from.
You
will be tested on grammar, structure and logical placement of sentences.
Other
subjects included on the English Composition CLEP test include:
- sentence
variety
- syntax
- voice
- diction
- idiom
- subject-verb
agreement
- clarity
- identify
main idea
- audience
- purpose
- coherence
- point
of view
You
will need to know how to:
- identify
sentence errors
- improve
a sentence
- restructure
a sentence
- revise
a work in progress
- analyze
writing
- write
an essay (optional)

I have
found the study guides very helpful. I have passed English Comp
I, English Comp II and the Introduction to Computers. I feel the
guides are well worth the cost. -Sandy T 5/6/08
I just wanted
to drop you guys a line and tell you that I passed my final CLEP
exam last Monday which gives me all of the credits I need to graduate.
I have taken 30 credits worth of CLEP exams and I’ve passed
them all by using your study guides. I actually purchased one of
your study guides and failed my first test. I didn’t fail
because of your guide though, I failed because I didn’t manage
my time effectively and I ran short. I looked at your study guide
after failing though, and a lot of the information on your study
guide was very relevant to what was on the test. So, I tried again
with a different test and a different study guide of yours. I passed.
This pattern continues for 30 credits. I graduate on June 9th thanks
to you guys, so I wanted to say thank you. The guides were worth
every penny. Thanks, -John S 5/21/07 |
